The Old Tongue (Part Twelve)

Prompt: Elaborate |  Genre: Fantasy  |  Word count: 120 words

The carpet of flowers tickled her bare feet as she padded towards the tree. Circling it, her hand traced the rough bark, the canopy casting a pink glow on her upturned face.

Something nagged her. She looked down to examine the bark under her hand. Her eyes widened and she scoured the area. Astonished, she stepped back.

The tree was covered in an elaborate floral design interspersed with runes.

“Can you read the Old Tongue?”

Startled, Runa stumbled back.

“Humans”, Raven muttered as he morphed into a man.

Runa bent low in the Old Way.

Raven smiled, “Your father taught you well.”

“You knew my father?!”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he took her hand and placed it on the tree.
